Writing Report for the Week Ending 15 January 2017

Short and sweet. The goals:

  1. 2,500 words of new fiction. This will focus on the remaining Undead stories, though I may squeeze a few words into Shrine.
  2. 2 chapters of 3rd draft pass on Universal Destiny. This will get me to the end of Ch 3. This is about 7,000 words of polishing, so it’s not as small a goal as you might think.
  3. 4 chapters of revision notes for Draugr Rising. This will take me to the end of Chapter 20 (there are 29).
  4. Rough draft of what I want for an episode of ISIRTA*.
  5. Second watch and note taking for the original BSG** pilot.
  6. Short Story Submissions: 1.
  7. Stretch Goal 1: dust off the rough plot for Fallen Heroes and add a chapter or two.
  8. Stretch Goal 2: get back to my Star Trek fan fic. Most of the shorts are still only at first draft completion.

The Results:

  1. 1,160 words of new fiction. Of these were about even split between beginning the Wraith short story for the Undead collection, and chipping my way back into Shrine, finding the beginning of Chapter 9 a little dull.
  2. 5 chapters of 3rd draft pass on Universal Destiny., so I’m now half way through chapter 4 on this draft.
  3. But I beat the last goal at the expense of this one, getting only 3 chapters of reading and revision notes for Draugr Rising, taking me to the end of Chapter 19 and leaving 10 to go.
  4. Rough draft of what I want for an episode of ISIRTA*. More of an outline on how I want to proceed.
  5. Second watch and note taking for the original BSG** pilot. Looking at the pilot in pieces. There’s actually almost three separate stories here, so I’m probably going to break it up that way.
  6. Short Story Submissions: 0. I’m going to plead exhaustion here. Work has been crazy and I don’t have a lot of energy by the time I get home. Several things have suffered.
  7. Stretch Goal 1: dust off the rough plot for Fallen Heroes and add a chapter or two. Dusted off and read through, but nothing added. I think I actually want to modify the last couple of chapters of rough plot and move in a slightly different direction.
  8. Stretch Goal 2: get back to my Star Trek fan fic. Most of the shorts are still only at first draft completion. Nope. No time.

And all this with basically three days of no writing at all. So not bad, I guess, and since my work life should slowly start to settle out from here, I think I might get a little further ahead this week. Also 1,275 words of non-fiction stuff.

Goals for next week:

  1. 2,500 words of new fiction. I don’t think I’m going to put the benchmark any lower here, regardless of actual results before work settles down. Sooner or later, this will be the right number. Sometime after that, it will be too low, at least for a while.
  2. I’d like to get to the end of at least Chapter 6 for the final draft pass on Universal Destiny.
  3. 5 chapters of revision notes for Draugr Rising. Chapters 19-23, leaving a sprint of 24-29 for the following week or two.
  4. Rough draft of what I want for an episode of ISIRTA*. Having made my notes, I think I can figure this one out.
  5. Storyline one post for the original BSG** pilot.
  6. Short Story Submissions: 1.
  7. Stretch Goal 1: add two chapters to the rough plot for Fallen Heroes.
  8. Stretch Goal 2: start on the final draft of my Uhura novelette.

Be well, everyone.

* ISIRTA = I’m Sorry, I’ll Read That Again

** BSG = Battlestar Galactica
