The goals:

  1. 2,500 words of new fiction. I don’t think I’m going to put the benchmark any lower here, regardless of actual results before work settles down. Sooner or later, this will be the right number. Sometime after that, it will be too low, at least for a while.
  2. I’d like to get to the end of at least Chapter 6 for the final draft pass on Universal Destiny.
  3. 5 chapters of revision notes for Draugr Rising. Chapters 19-23, leaving a sprint of 24-29 for the following week or two.
  4. Rough draft of what I want for an episode of ISIRTA*. Having made my notes, I think I can figure this one out.
  5. Storyline one post for the original BSG** pilot.
  6. Short Story Submissions: 1.
  7. Stretch Goal 1: add two chapters to the rough plot for Fallen Heroes.
  8. Stretch Goal 2: start on the final draft of my Uhura novelette.

The Results:

  1. 2,663 words of new fiction, finishing off the Wraith story and maybe figuring out the way forward on Shrine with 633 words added to chapter 9.
  2. Final draft pass on Universal Destiny done to the end of chapter 6. Check.
  3. Reading and revision notes for Draugr Rising: 6 chapters where I’d planned for 5. Granting that the sixth chapter was quite short.
  4. ISIRTA*. Figured out how I want to do this project.
  5. Second watch and note taking for the original BSG** pilot. I also have the post half done and plan to finish it on my next day off. It just needs a little more commentary and some images.
  6. Short Story Submissions: 0. I’ll just mark this as a fail and move on.
  7. Stretch Goal 1: accomplished.
  8. Stretch Goal 2: untouched.

Overall, a successful week, I think. And my work is starting to settle a bit. Not quite getting out when my day is supposed to be over, but it’s starting to get closer.

Goals for next week:

  1. 2,500 words of new fiction. I’d like to finish the last scene in Chapter 9 of Shrine, and the last three Undead stories are supposed to be flash pieces under a thousand words, so it would be nice to knock one of those out.
  2. 4 chapters on the final draft pass on Universal Destiny. There are some quick action sequences coming up, so the chapters are a bit shorter to increase the pace.
  3. 4 chapters of revision notes for Draugr Rising, which will actually take me to the end of the story, so it would be nice to get there.
  4. ISIRTA*. I’m going to take this in bite sized chunks. Goal for this week is to listen to the original pilot and the first (short) 3-episode season purely for enjoyment and to slip back into the comedy.
  5. Storyline two post for the original BSG** pilot.
  6. Short Story Submissions: 1. Let’s try this again.
  7. Stretch Goal 1: add two chapters to the rough plot for Fallen Heroes.
  8. Stretch Goal 2: start on the final draft of my Uhura novelette.

I read an interesting short article about Isaac Asimov this week. Looking beyond his status of Grandmaster of Science Fiction, he wrote nearly 500 books in his life and a disturbing number of short stories, essays, and articles. Apparently, one of the ways he did this was to always have multiple projects on the go at once. I read that and thought, hey, that’s me! But he did things a little differently. While I try to make progress on multiple things at the same time, he tried to focus on one thing as long as possible, switching to something else only when the current project stalled or gave him trouble. And he’d often have a dozen things on tap so he could switch from one to another as needed and let his brain catch up.

So in that spirit, if I’m making good progress on something, I’m going to try not switching to something else just because I’ve hit a goal. For that project for the week. I’ll probably pick and choose the main project for a day or a session, but I’ll try for there to be only one thing I’m working on for a given tour in front of the keyboard.

Be well, everyone.

* ISIRTA = I’m Sorry, I’ll Read That Again

** BSG = Battlestar Galactica
