Writing Report, October 2014

photo_2164_20070217October was tough to get stuff done. A couple of major life events, in particular major surgery for my wife, made creative stuff take a distance third seat after family and work.

And yet, when I look back, it isn’t too bad for totals.

The quick summary for October, 2014:

Novel WIP

The Godhead

25,350 words which basically means that on the days I did work on the novel, I managed almost 1,600 words per day. Not bad, and I finished off on a chapter break. When I pick it up in November, I have 11 chapters left for an estimated 25,000 words. I’m thinking I might be able to finish it off before the end of the year.

Scattered On the Wind

Trying a variation of “intro, three disasters, and an ending” plotting, I’ve put together 4,352 words of plot and a scene list, but ignoring character completely. Jules will tell me who she wants to be as the story builds. This is thicker than I’ve traditionally plotted and a long, long way from the discovery writing of Dragon Summer those many moons ago.

Short Fiction

A fair bit of work here, but not much of it new. Actually, almost nothing.

659 words, the first third of a piece of flash fiction that I still want to write, but I’m having issues with the transition in the middle.

The big thing here was deciding to serialize “Babysitting the Taran-Saurus” before I’d started the third draft. That third draft is done now and I’m more or less doing the final before each part posts on Fridays. It’s going up on my blog and on Wattpad, and will wind up being something close to 14,000 words spread across 9 parts, which means a little more than 1,500 words per installment, on average. A touch long, but I think it works.

Year of Trek Fiction

One whole scene on the Scotty novelette. Something tells me the Year of Trek isn’t going to be as ready to go on the 1st of January, 2016 as I might like. Probably still lots to finalize by then. Ah, well. It will be fun.

Other Writing

The catch-all bucket held 23,360 words this month, which is pretty good, even if it contained less blogging than I’d like.

Total for the Month

It all totals up to 58,755 words for October, only 864 words less than September, which is pretty amazing, all things considered. And a lot more of it was fiction.

Goals for November:

  1. NaNoWriMo. That is all. I may throw out a status update here and there, and if you want to be my writing buddy on nanowrimo.org, you’re looking for writingdad.

Be well, everyone.
