In recognition that my life isn’t all one thing, I’m trying to have the website branch out a little bit. It’s certainly not going to cover everything, and the blog is already kind of eclectic, but there are certain major areas of focus. I don’t talk about family much here – each of them should enjoy the freedom to decide what goes online about themselves as much as possible without me mucking things up in the background. But there are three main areas that a lot of my time falls into otherwise.
Lance the Academic
In early 2020, along with a lot of the rest of the work force, I got sent home with the expectation that we’d make some adjustments and be back to work in just be a few weeks. Four and a half years later, I’m three and a half years into an Honours Physics degree and part of a bridge program that’s letting me start my MSc before I’ve actually finished the BSc.

Lance the Martial Artist
I started my real martial arts journey in April 2010, joining a local karate club with my then 11-year-old son. We’d later be joined by my oldest daughter and my wife. All of them have since moved on to other pursuits and I’ve carried on, still enjoying it and still learning, though at a pace that varies a lot and at an inverse to the craziness of the rest of my life. Along the way, I’ve achieved the obvious goal of black belt, learning before I got there that it’s just the beginning, and started along a kobudo (traditional Okinawan weapons) path as well.

Lance the Writer
I’ve been a writer on and off for nearly as long as I can remember. I started to take it seriously in the second half of 2008 and started placing a few stories here and there in the next few years. Then my day job started to demand a lot of extra time, getting worse when I accepted a transfer and a couple of promotions. COVID came along and I started to make progress again for a while… and then I became a full-time student… and I’m pretty much just getting back on track at the end of 2024. The coming academic term should be lighter, and I’ve got substantial plans for 2025.
The blog is where you’ll mostly find my writing-related stuff, but on the base writing page you’ll find bibliographies, a list of Works In Progress, a writer’s bio, and probably some other stuff, eventually.
