SF Saturday

As in Science Fiction, because it’s me and not a football fan, classical composer, or foreign currency enthusiast.

I may have mentioned in the past that I really can’t binge watch things like a lot of people seem to, unless it’s in extremely short bursts. I can probably do a six-episode season or series fairly quickly if I really want to, but even that I’d have to stretch out over two or three days, especially if it’s hour-long episodes.

But I do like to have a lot of new stories in my media consumption, although the word “new” should be read as “new to me, mostly, but sometimes I’ll rewatch things for nostalgia purposes or because I really love them”. As a result, I’m typically watching ten or twelve different shows from various time periods, cycling through the whole list in two to four weeks, depending on how my academic workload is, plus there’s usually one or two shows my daughter and I are watching together.

The list looks like this at the moment:

  1. Alien Nation S01
  2. Ark II S01
  3. The Avengers S05
  4. Bubblegum Crisis S02b
  5. Doctor Who Classic S14
  6. Eerie Indiana S01
  7. Get Smart S02
  8. Max Headroom S02
  9. MacGyver S01
  10. Nisser S01
  11. Stargate SG1 S01
  12. Star Trek: Lower Decks S05
  13. The Tick Animated S02
  14. The Venture Bros. S06

There are a variety of reasons for something to be on my watch list from nostalgia to not seeing something first run in whole or in part to hearing about something I was never exposed to or that was produced in a language other than English because sometimes the internet is actually worth having for stuff like that.

You’ll note that it’s nearly all Science Fiction in some fashion. The Avengers, for example, might be thought of by most folks as a mainly British spy thriller taking place in the 1960s period of Cold War, which is fair, but some of the episodes very much cross over into SF territory. Get Smart is the other side of the coin, spy comedy, and I love Mel Brooks’ work in almost every form. Nisser is closer to Dark Fantasy, not my normal fare, but an attempt to broaden my horizons.

You’ll also note that the list spans most of six decades worth of genre television. My tastes are wide, and I’ll watch whatever entertains me. Once in a while, it isn’t even what I consider speculative.

So, what’s the point of SF Saturday as far as the blog goes?

Not that I promise it will happen every week, but the idea is I’ll share something I’ve watched in the previous week (probably something that isn’t Star Trek, but no promises) and comment on it. That’s all. There won’t be a critique and I’m unlikely to rate things on any kind of scale, but I’ll point out fun, silly, weird, or awesome things about the episode of the show in question. A new thing I’m trying for 2025. While I’m comfortable in the genres I enjoy and work in, I want to broaden the types of writing I’m doing.

We’ll see what next week brings that I really want to share.

Be well, everyone.
