May Theme: Micro-fiction

I suggested (okay, stated outright) that I was going to return to the idea of each month of 2025 having a writing theme beginning May 1st. That plan calls for a piece of micro-fiction every day in May, May Micro, if you’ll excuse the alliteration, which I’m going to do anyway because it entertains me.

Micro-fiction is somehow less defined than other lengths in the genres I mostly write in (Science Fiction and Fantasy). When it’s considered “separate” from Short stories (under 7500 words), Flash is usually taken as meaning a maximum of 1000 words, but where does Flash transition to Micro? There seem to be as many definitions as definers, so I’ve decided that I get to choose what it means to me. For the purpose of the theme this month I’m making the cutoff 250 words. Anything under that mark I’m calling Micro-fiction.

Probably, I’ll mostly be targeting Drabble length (exactly 100 words) as it’s a length that appeals to me. Ordinarily, I’m of the mind that a story should be as long as it needs to be but Drabbles are fun. I like round numbers, and I enjoy the challenge of targeting a specific length.

Since it’s May Day today, I’d better get going on the first one, not that I have any idea what it’s going to be about yet.

Be well, everyone.
