I’m 55 today.
To be a bit depressing for a moment, where I live the average male life expectancy is 81 by current demographics. Dividing that into thirds for youth, middle age, and let’s call them senior years, we come up with 0-27, 28-54, and 55-81. So, if I’ve just turned 55, that should mark the beginning of my senior years, correct? Not that at least one of my children hasn’t jokingly been calling me old for several years now, but by my own logic, I’m entering old age.
I don’t really think of myself as old yet, though certainly older than a lot of the people around me (being a university student at my age will tend to have that effect, though it’s a little less pronounced in graduate school), but there are plenty of businesses and associations that consider 55 the start of “senior”. So be it.
Happy birthday to me.
Be well, everyone.
