Writing Report for March 2026

I got sidetracked by a lot of academics in March, which will probably happen again in April as I’ve still got the due dates for a project, a presentation, an exam, and a major research proposal between now and the end of the month.

What I’m hoping doesn’t happen again in April is the dedication of most of my writing time into non-fiction. I still want to get work done in that vein, of course, I just don’t want it to be most of what I’m doing this month. More progress on fiction.

The overall wordcount for March was a respectable but lower than originally planned 42,420, and almost two thirds of that went into various aspects of the (slightly reorganized) Memory Project and blog posts.

Without making too big a deal out of things:

  • Fiction drafting came out to a little more than 12.5k words’ worth of work on the first draft of Heroic Genesis. I’d wanted this to be closer to 25k, but that was self-imposed. As long as the story doesn’t grow too much in the telling, I still expect to be finished this sometime in May. If it does grow a lot, then sometime in June.
  • I did the last character sketch for the first Valkyr Station novel but again, this isn’t a huge priority. I have enough outlined novels to last me for several years, at least. While I’d planned to potentially plot three novels this year, that isn’t strictly necessary, and the primary goal is only one.
  • March had 12 blog posts, my best month yet this year
  • Lots of work on the memory project – mainly on the gathering old journal entries and blog posts and adding a bit of commentary here and there.
  • I haven’t done March’s poetry transcriptions yet, but flipping through the notebook, there are seven poems that aren’t haiku.

The basic word count:

  • A total of 12,511 words of new fiction,
  • 2,034 words of net change while editing things,
  • A total of 407 words of plotting on Valkyr Station Book 1,
  • 27,468 words worth of non-fiction, split between the Memory Project and blog posts.

All in all, that doesn’t seem too bad for what was a very busy month. And I’m honestly not sure I’ve got any other kind between now and the end of the year.

Be well, everyone.
