I seem to be migrating away from topping my blog posts with images, and it’s mostly intentional. The last half dozen posts, this one included, and (with one exception) the next several I have scheduled don’t have what WordPress refers to as a featured image. A couple of those posts have images inside them, but you won’t see them on the homepage if you just go to to the top page of lanceschonberg.com.

My original intent was to have a few standard images that would tell you what kind of a post something was. The classic Royal typewriter image (yes, I know Underwood is the trope, but I like the key definition on the very old Royal brand better for some reason I can’t quite define – I’m sure if I ever came into possession of an Underwood, it would immediately become my favourite, though) meant the post was about writing. A notebook with a pen meant poetry. Stacks of books meant reading. Things like that.

It somehow morphed quickly into every post that was about anything else needed a tailored image and my media library expanded to almost annoying dimensions (when I was looking for a particular image) very quickly. When I switched to a new host, I had the opportunity to start over and tried to revert back to just a few standard images, but it didn’t last as long as is should have and the library started to grow again, currently at 61 images, most of which are better available somewhere else or, if more personal, aren’t likely to be seen again after the first pass my small audience makes on a particular post.

So I’m trying to cut back. We’ll see how long that lasts, because I do get some fun out of the hunt, but if my primary reason for having a blog in the first place is as a writer, then how much time should I really be spending looking for the perfect image for a blog post?

Be well, everyone.
